June 2019

Year 5/6 Athletics - Thursday 6th June

A team of 19 children from Year 5 & 6 visited Eastbourne Sports Complex for the Annual Darlington Large Primary Schools Town Sports. They put in a great overall team performance to finish a superb 2nd place overall ahead of Abbey in 3rd place, but behind St George’s who won on the day. They performed particularly well on the track claiming several Gold Medals and several more podium places. The children were a credit to the school, with every single one of them trying their hardest in all individual and team events. Well done Team Mowden.

Year 5 Cricket Competition - Monday 10th June

On Monday 10th June ten year 5 pupils took part in a quick cricket tournament at Feethams cricket ground. Our pupils played against 5 other schools, winning 3 matches and losing 3 matches. Our cricket skills definitely improved throughout the day and we learnt some excellent tactics. All pupils really excelled themselves, were very supportive of each other and enjoyed themselves immensely.

Netball finals - Monday 17th June

We would like to congratulate our Year 5/6 netball team on winning all six of their league games playing against other Darlington schools. The children play to a very high standard and work hard as a team. It produces some great goal scoring. Mrs Greenwell and Mrs Turner are very proud of them all. The team will now go forward and play against the winner and runners up of the other school league to find the overall winner. We wish them all the best of luck.

Tees Valley School Games - Wednesday 19th June

Four Mowden pupils took part in the Tees Valley Finals for athletics this week at Middlesbrough . They had progressed through the Town Sports heats to compete for Darlington against other regions in the North East. Their attitude and behaviour was brilliant and even though we didn't necessarily expect to win any medals, we came away with a gold medal in the Year 5 girls Chest Pass (23 feet) and a silver medal for one of our boys in the Yr 6 boys relay. Fantastic effort from all, well done team Mowden!

Year 3/4 Cricket Festival - Friday 28th June

A squad of 10 children visited Darlington RA for great day of Festival Cricket with 14 other schools. The children got to play in some ‘competitive’ fixtures and take part in some fun Cricket Drills which helped them to improve their skills. The children had a fantastic time, learnt lots about Cricket and had lots of fun. Well done everybody.

They were all amazing and did really well.  A special mention to Louie who came first overall in the boys and Tia  who came first overall in the girls, both winning a Gold Medal.

May 2019

Year 4 Quad Kids - Friday 10th May

Two teams of 14 children per team visited Eastbourne for great afternoon of Quad-kids Athletics. The children got to try their hand at the 400m run, the Howler Throw, the Standing Long Jump, and the 50m sprint. The children had a brilliant time, enjoying both the competitive and fun element of Athletics. Well done Everybody.

Year 5/6 Hockey - Tuesday 21st May

A group of 10 children played 3 matches in a mini league, winning 2 out of the three games and scoring a whopping 12 goals.
Abbey (A) were the team we lost to and as luck would have it, we then had to play them again in the draw for the semis! Despite some heroic defending we sadly lost and were then in the playoffs for 3rd and 4th place. It was to be narrowly beaten again that we finished the day in overall 4th place out of the 12 teams competing. Abbey (A) were the team that won overall and will go through to the next level - a very strong team to represent the town, we wish them well.
We had a great afternoon and it gave the children a fantastic opportunity to experience hockey on a real pitch.

We got a certificate presented to us at the end. We were both really proud to represent Mowden and would love to go again.

On Monday 4th March, a group of year 5s and 6s went to a swimming gala at the Dolphin Centre. Our team of 20 pupils competed against seven other large primary schools and we saw some great individual performances, especially in the freestyle relays. Although we are unlikely to progress to the finals, a great morning was had by all and all pupils entered into the team spirit showing respect and determination.

Year 6 Dance Festival - Tuesday 12th March

A squad of Y6 boys performed magnificently at the Darlington Primary Dance Festival held at the Hippodrome. The title piece was 'Culture of Technology' and was a dance based around the idea that our lives are dominated by mobile devices, meaning we rarely take the chance to take notice of what's going on around us.  Although it wasn't a competition so there were no prizes on offer, we definitely received the largest cheer and round of applause from the packed crowd.

February 2019

Year 5/6 Girls Football - Monday 4th February

On Monday 4th February, 9 year 5 & 6 girls went to Eastbourne Sports complex to play a six a side football tournament. It was very cold so we had to keep running round the outside of the pitch to keep warm when it was not our turn. We played against 4 other schools. We won our first match 3-0 with both Lola and Sofia scoring but then lost the following 3 matches 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0. It was good fun and was great to play together, looking at who was the best in each position.

Year 3 Tennis competition - Tuesday 5th February

In February we went to Wyvern Academy for a tennis day. We had a girls team and a boys team and we did different activities. We played some matches together but we also did some skills games where we were practising passing the tennis ball and rolling it to knock down a stick. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed the matches.

In the afternoon they played in a group of 6 teams, and finished second overall, winning their first three games and drawing the last two 0-0, with the final game against the overall winners Whinfield an exciting winner takes all affair. After playing 9 games all day, they ended with a brilliant record of 7 wins and 2 draws, scoring 15 goals and not conceding any the whole day. Well done Boys.

Year 5/6 Boys Open Football plate - Monday 25th February

Mowden’s B Team performed very well at the recent Darlington Schools Plate, playing against many smaller schools A teams. In the group stages they qualified 2nd after playing 5 games and winning 4 of them. In the afternoon the games were played as a knockout, unfortunately they lost to eventual winners Corporation Road in the Quarter finals, but then won their next two games to finish 5th out of 17 teams. Well done boys.

Year 5/6 High Five Netball Cup - Thursday 28th February

A squad of 8 girls visited Polam for great day of competitive Netball against 17 other teams. The group stages were a close battle with ourselves, Polam ‘A’ and Holy Family evenly matched, however after taking points from each other it went down to wins and points scored against the other schools in the group, with Mowden qualifying in Second Place on Points Difference. The record for the morning was 4 wins and one defeat.

This meant in the afternoon they played in the Top Group for a chance to finish from 1st to 4th. Unfortunately, they came up against a well organised Hurworth Team, and the 2 Polam teams. Mowden finished the afternoon with one win and two losses and in a very creditable 3rd place and Bronze medal winners. Well done Girls.

Our second match was against Abbey and we won 3-2 in a very close match which we won in a penalty shootout.  Alex also scored in this game. We played a final match but we lost. Performances to note include from one of our year 3 boys who beat all others in his category of the year 3 and 4 boys. We also had a very strong year 5 team. In the finals, we had the most pupils from Mowden that we have had in a long time. 7 of our children represented Mowden and  we were particularly proud of 2 of our year 5 boys who came 9th and 10th in a large field. Well done Team Mowden!
