PHONICS
At Mowden, we use the Essential Letters and Sounds programme (ELS) to teach the letter sounds. Children learn the letter sound then are taught to blend for reading and segment for spelling.
The ELS links with our Oxford Reading Books and ensures that children are reading a decodable book linked to the letters taught/learnt.
We encourage children to read their book at least 4 times a week to become a fluent reader. Repetition and review of such texts are key to children developing a good reading habit.
We have added the phase 2 and phase 3 sound videos to help with the production of pure sounds.
